THE BIRDING PROJECT BEGAN AS A BIG YEAR

In January 2016, Christian Hagenlocher decided to do a Big Year differently from anyone else who had previously made an effort to break the 700 milestone. Living in his Subaru Outback, he drove across the country in search of new birds and a deeper understanding of how people interact with birds and the natural world around them. This "EPIC" approach focused on more than just a high number of birds, and resulted in a fascinating snapshot of the birding community across North America.

epic IS AN ACRONYM

ENGAGE        OTHERS WITH BIRDS TO PROMOTE LEARNING

PRESERVE       BIRD HABITAT IN URBAN AND RURAL AREAS

                                INSPIRE         PEOPLE TO EXPLORE OUTSIDE

CONNECT        PEOPLE WITH NATURE USING TECHNOLOGY

The Birding Project serves an educational role in the birding community. Starting with Christian's 2016 Big Year, The Birding Project is gathering the stories of birders, and creating inspiring, dynamic presentations to help people connect with nature, learning about birds and humans through unique perspectives and birders' own words. We want to hear from you, learn from you, and bird with you.
