You have to open your eyes first. It’s a matter of becoming aware of what’s around you

What advice would you give to someone new to birding?

"I would consider [learning] hawks first. Come up to a hawk watch! Even if you don’t particularly like hawks. You can start with a fairly narrow group and you can become gradually more and more familiar with them, especially during migration. You have to open your eyes first. It’s a matter of becoming aware of what’s around you."
